The global output of primary magnesium increased by 4.8% year on year to 808 kilotons in 2012, mainly driven by the growing output of primary magnesium in China. China is the largest producer of magnesium metal in the world, with the output increasing by 5.7% year on year from 661 kilotons in 2011 to 698 kilotons in 2012, followed by Russia, Israel and Kazakstan with 37 kilotons, 30 kilotons and 21 kilotons respectively, basically consistent with the previous year. In 2012, the magnesium alloy market demand is still the main engine driving the global primary magnesium consumption.
